Drunk for a penny
Drunk for a penny, dead drunk for tuppence, clean straw for nothing.
— London gin-shop slogan (c. 1750)
Illustration by Baron Georges Cuvier (1769-1832).
Not everyone, in our experience, immediately understands this card, because of the enormous change in context between the eighteenth century and today. The clean straw served as bedding to allow customers to sleep off the paralytic effects of the gin.
4¼ x 6 postcard (10.8 x 15.2 cm).
Printed in U.S.A. on recycled acid-free paper.
Comes in several attractive, softly speckled colors.
